Ever thought,
“I know I can do this job if someone would just give me a chance”?
Well, waiting around won’t cut it.
Companies aren’t in the business of handing out chances—they’re focused on minimizing risks and costs. Recruitment and training are expensive, and a bad hire can cost a company thousands, if not hundreds of thousands in losses. So, if you want a chance, you need to create it yourself.
Here’s how:
Stop relying solely on your resume and cover letter. These tools are important but not enough to stand out in today’s competitive job market. You need to show potential employers exactly what you can bring to the table.
- Are you a salesperson? Create a sales deck and record a video of your pitch. Demonstrate your understanding of the company’s products and how you can drive sales.
- Eyeing a marketing role? Conduct a competitive analysis. Identify where the company is missing out and propose strategies to capture those opportunities. Show your insight into the market and your innovative thinking.
- Want to be in product management? Survey the company’s customers. Identify issues and opportunities based on real user feedback, and put together a detailed report. Highlight your problem-solving skills and your ability to improve the product.
Take action: Send your deliverable to every key player involved in the hiring decision. This could include managers, team leads, and even the HR department. Utilize LinkedIn, company websites, professional networks and B2B tools such as Apollo.io to find their contact information
Follow up: If you don’t hear back, don’t give up. Follow up with polite reminders. Persistence can often set you apart from other candidates.
Be persistent: The job market is crowded, and competition is fierce. By taking these extra steps, you demonstrate your commitment, initiative, and creativity. These qualities can make a significant impression on hiring managers.
A few days ago, I posted this on LinkedIn:
Even as a job board owner, I must be honest with you. Job boards are useful for identifying hiring companies, but if you’re aiming for a job that 2x your salary, expect competition.
If you want to beat out the competition, stop using the exact same strategies as everyone else. If you want a chance, stop waiting for someone else to give it to you. Create it for yourself.
