“Networking is marketing. Marketing yourself, your uniqueness, what you stand for.”

Christine Comaford-Lynch’s quote hits home for anyone looking for a job.

Networking is your best tool for career growth, it allows you to build strong relationships and a solid reputation.

Here are three actionable tips to kickstart your networking journey:

1. Download Your 1st Degree Connections on Linkedin

Networking is easiest with people you already know. LinkedIn ran a massive study on more than 20 million people over a 5-year period. The outcome? "Weak ties" with old acquaintances and colleagues actually led to more job offers (you can read more about it here).

The best part is, LinkedIn will actually send you a list of these people. Here's how to get it:

  1. Go to "Me" > Settings & Privacy.
  2. Choose "Data Privacy," then "Get A Copy of Your Data" (this link will take you straight there).
  3. Click the 2nd Option ("Want Something In Particular?").
  4. Select "Connections."
  5. Request the Archive.

LinkedIn will grab all of your 1st connections and email them over to you. If a connection has allowed their email address to be shared via LinkedIn, you'll get a copy of their email in the export too!

Now send them a note 👇

Template 1: People who you already know
Subject: Quick Question
Hi [Name],
Hope you’re doing well! It's been a while since we last connected. I'm currently exploring new career opportunities and thought I'd reach out. If you know of any roles that fit my skills in [Your Skill/Industry], I'd love to hear about them.
Template 2: LinkedIn Connections that you haven't interacted with

Hi [Name],
I hope you're doing well! We’re connected here on LinkedIn, and I wanted to reach out. I’m currently exploring new career opportunities and thought you might have some valuable insights. If you know of any roles that fit my skills in [Your Skill/Industry], I'd really appreciate your input.

2. Cold Email Outreach (After Applying for a Job)

Cold emailing can be an effective way to reach out to hiring managers after you have applied to the role. Here are a few tips to draft a great email

  • Personalize: Research the recipient’s background and the company’s needs.
  • Show value: Explain how your skills and experiences align with the company’s goals.
  • Be concise: Include a clear call-to-action, like requesting a meeting.
  • Follow up: If there’s no response in a week or two, follow up.

Here's a template you can use 👇
Hi [Hiring Manager's Name],
I came across the [Job Title] position at XYZ Job Board and got really excited about the opportunity. I did some digging and saw your recent [funding/news]—very impressive! You guys are doing amazing things.
I applied for the [Role] and believe I can bring [specific skills or qualities] to your team. My resume is attached for your review.
Thanks for considering my application!
Have an awesome day!
Best,

Follow up if you don’t receive a response within a week or two.

Don’t know their email address? Here’s a free tool Experte Email Finder that lets you find the email of the hiring manager or decision maker. All you need is their full name and company website, and the tool will do the rest to find the email addresses

3. Find and Connect with Individuals Within the Department You Will Be Working In

LinkedIn makes it super easy to find them. Here’s how:

  1. Make a list of 10+ companies hiring for your target job.
  2. Head to LinkedIn and run a search for your target job title (e.g., "Account Executive").
  3. Filter for "People." and "Companies"

Now you have a list of everyone who works at the target companies. Reach out to them using the template below:

Subject: Quick Question
Hi [Name],
I noticed that you work in [Department] at [Company] and thought it would be great to connect. I’m currently looking into opportunities within [Your Skill/Industry] and would love to learn more about your experience at [Company].
Best regards,

Conclusion

Networking isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a game-changer. By tapping into your existing connections, boldly reaching out to industry movers, and connecting with future colleagues, you’ll pave your way to incredible opportunities. The secret sauce? Be authentic, add value, and stay proactive.

Stay sharp, keep hustling, and watch those doors fly open. Happy networking!
